May 1 & 2 2008 - SNAMP Fire Modeling Workshop, Berkeley

May 2 2008

We had a great workshop for SNAMP scientists and interested parties going through a fire modeling tool called ArcFuels. Alan Ager, Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center, Pacific Northwest Research Station, USDA Forest service. This workshop introduced the ArcFuels VBA macros written for ArcGIS version 9.2 (available from www.fs.fed.us/wwetac/arcfuels). The workshop started with Alan Ager presenting analyses and results from two Oregon study areas in which ArcFuels was used to evaluate the effects of fuel treatment alternatives on potential fire behavior and fire risk. The workshop then went into an interactive mode of teaching/using ArcFuels including running fire behavior model FlamMap, assessing fire behavior with FlamMap, designing thinning and/or burning fuel treatments, evaluating FVS fuel treatment scenario outputs, and integrating other data into FlamMap. The workshop was hosted in the Geospatial Imaging and Informatics Facility.
